Does Ford Own Lincoln

2023 Lincoln Navigator

Whether you're a long-time driver of Lincoln vehicles, or you're considering your first new Lincoln, you might wonder who owns Lincoln. Does Ford own Lincoln? Ford does make Lincoln vehicles, but that hasn't always been the case. Find out more about how your Lincoln Nautilus or Lincoln Navigator made its way to your Macon garage with Five Star Lincoln.

Is Lincoln Made by Ford?-A History of the Lincoln Brand

To determine what owns Ford today, we need to start back in 1917 in Dearborn, Michigan. That's when the Lincoln Automotive Company was founded to increase the variety of vehicles available to drivers. With an eye toward luxury, they quickly gave Cadillac some competition.

At that time, Ford was selling a single model, the Model T, but interest in it was dropping. The company also took on the luxury car market with the Model A. There were so many similarities between the Model A and Lincoln vehicles that the Ford was jokingly referred to as "Baby Lincoln" by drivers. That led to Ford seeing an opportunity to expand. Instead of reinventing the wheel by developing more models, Ford purchased Lincoln. Since then, Ford has made Lincoln and has kept the Ford and Lincoln brands separate. While Lincoln still caters to the luxury market, Ford successfully moved into the mainstream and continues to be one of the biggest auto manufacturers in the world.

Where is Lincoln Made by Ford?

Like Ford vehicles, most Lincoln vehicles are made in North America. The original Lincoln factory was designated as a National Historic Site in 1978 because of its contribution to American automotive history but was demolished in the early 2000s. Today, the Lincoln Nautilus is made in Ontario, Canada. The Lincoln Aviator is assembled in Chicago, while the Lincoln Navigator and Corsair are manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky.
